You have a few choices to get audio book downloads. For starters, while these top services do offer downloads, they are not technically mp3s. Still, they are small files and act just like they are - you can play them on your computer, transfer them to a mobile device (cell phone or mp3 player) or burn them to CD.
Audible - The only service to offer direct iPod compatibility. When you download audio books from audible you can put them directly onto your iPod. You can also burn them to CDs, play them on your computer or play them on many other mp3 players. A full list is on their site, but it does include all iPods.
Booksfree Rentals - Booksfree audio books come on CD in the mail, so when you get them, you can import them into iTunes or turn them into MP3s just like you do with any other CD. It's a pretty simple solution that gives you the combination of their mail order rentals with the ability to make MP3s that are compatible with iPods or any other MP3 player.
Simply Audiobooks - Simply Audiobooks also offers by mail rentals that can be imported into iTunes or turned into MP3s just like any other CD. Their downloads are playable on your computer, and are Windows Media device compatible, but not iPod compatible. The good news is that these downloads can still get onto your iPod if you first burn them to CD, and then import the burned CD into iTunes. It isn't perfect, but it will get the job done.
Basically, if iTunes compatibility is most important to you, audible is probably the way to go. If the other services meet your needs better, you still have lots of options for making MP3s.
